Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy

Being able to open up and use an app on a tablet, watch a YouTube video from a computer, and Google cool facts about whales are all useful skills for our students to learn. Having these skills though does not mean our children are technological experts. Just as we teach them how to cultivate social relationships at school and how to navigate resources in a library, we must teach our children how act on the internet and how to navigate the numerous resources available at their fingertips. This is where Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy come into play. Digital Citizenship is all about teaching our children how to be safe, respectful, and responsible in the digital realm. Media Literacy involves providing children with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate, consume, and understand all of the sources they have access to. In addition, it covers the creation of content as well. Therefore, my hope is that this page can serve as a resource as you work with your children to develop their online skills.
