The latest “YouTube sensation” is Jasmine “Birdy” Van den Bogaerde, a 15 year-old from the New Forest, whose version of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love has racked up 7 million views.
2011 debut album from Birdy (AKA Jasmine Van den Bogaerde) features her unique interpretation of songs by Bon Iver, Cherry Ghost, Phoenix, The National, The Postal Service and The xx. Birdy has recorded the album in the UK and US and worked with some of the best producers of the moment including Rich Costey (Muse, TV on the Radio), James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Last Shadow Puppets and Klaxons) and Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys).
This debut consolidates the buzz with more sparse, affecting covers (the XX, James Taylor), and a lone original track that is adequately folkish, but for now Birdy remains a novelty. Her rich, malleable vocals suggest, however, that she won’t be caged for long.
