In his review of that record, Ian Cohen wrote that it lacked a “point of view,” a polite way of saying that it’s hard to pinpoint what a “Born Gold song” sounded like because it’s uncertain if, at that point, such a thing existed.

“Hunger”, our first peek at the forthcoming I Am an Exit (out October 8 via Art Control/Hovercraft), goes a long way towards correcting Little Sleepwalker‘s faults. Frena wields a festival-sized hook that, for a change, you don’t have to squint to hear. Ditching the digital obfuscation he’s previously relied on, Frena’s vocals are upfront and clearer than they’ve ever been, his aching tenor swelling to a breaking point as he tries to put himself back together after what sounds like the end of an unhealthy relationship. Frena sings of “treading water for days,” but for the first time in his career, he sounds comfortable with his breaststroke.

Previously, Frena made music under the name Gobble Gobble, before he made the change in 2011 to Born Gold.

Soundcloud

I’m going to cuss.
