Hyperpotamus – De Camino

An amazing album all done a capella. The Spanish singer is quite the producer!

From the Album:

Hyperpotamus – Delta (2012) WARNING ON THE COVER ART!

Quick synopsis and review:

Hyperpotamus is Spanish musician Jorge Ramírez-Escudero, who brings a new rigour to the notion of solo performance: all the pieces on Delta are structured from his own looped and layered vocal tracks, painstakingly built into exotic sonic edifices without using any actual instruments.

Staccato percussive phrases combine with sung basslines to underpin his theatrical bluesy croon, tracks like “Seahorse for Dragon” producing an absurdist romantic doowop, with various disparate harmonies surrounding and counterpointing the (mostly English) lead vocals. It’s all done with meticulous attention to detail – “Electroclash” apes the oozing decay of a real synth bassline – with the finished tracks blending beatboxing, Take 6-style a cappella jazz and Wilsonian banked harmonies. Can’t wait to see him do it live…

Foxes – Oh Rosie

One word I have for this: Oddtastic! From London.

From the Album: Foxes! – Foxes! (2012)

Quickie Review:

Oh Rosie adopts a sinister vibe, bringing Adam’s vocals to the fore.  It makes for a pleasant change and rescues the album from monotony.  Its rickety thump character is almost lovable, the highlight of the album.  Things take an interesting and unusual turn with It’s Ridiculous Adam, electro reminiscent of your old Nintendo is combined with Kayla’s delicate vocals to produce one of the weirder and more extreme moments of the record.  Who Killed Rob brings with it further lashings of electronic whimsy, followed by the quirkiness of Descartes.  Low key guitar nestles beside lyrics such as ‘my dog got anal cancer’, this is not an album centered on deep, thought provoking lyrics rather the go hand in hand with the band’s child infused sound.  Album closer Apples To Apples falls a bit flat next to its neighbours, it’s by no means a distinctive end.

Lost Lander – Cold Feet

Portland has landed another great band. Check out Lost Lander!

From the album: Lost Lander – DRRT (2012)

A review: (Paste)

It’s amazing how often production value is overlooked when considering an artist’s musical output. In the case of Portland’s Lost Lander and their debut LP DRRT it’s impossible not to address it—the production is as palpable as the vocals. It literally becomes another instrument.

The credit goes to Brent Knopf, former member of Portland band Menomena, whose records were notably built from bits and scraps of organic and electronic noise. In the end they sounded both schizophrenic and enormous. Lost Lander do right by enlisting Knopf, who turns songwriter Matt Sheehy’s quirky folk-pop songs into mini-epics.

In fact, as is arguably the case with Wilco’sYankee Hotel Foxtrot, without the bells and whistles DRRT might be left with songs that are nothing if, well, ordinary. The production saves opener “Cold Feet” from falling completely flat. “Belly of the Bird / Valentina”—a terrific song in its own right—benefits from sparkling bursts of synth, which seamlessly comingle with lush piano and well-placed violin stabs. And “The Sailor” loads more string arrangements on top of echoed choruses, put over the top (in a good way) with handclaps.

To Sheehy’s credit, he does carve out some compelling dynamics. The strummy “Gossamer” hits the minute-and-a-half mark with a breathtaking free-fall, while “Dead Moon” remains relatively quiet until the haunting female chorus takes over briefly about midway through. The moments are subtle, but they’re incredibly effective.

DRRT’s best song is closer “Your Name is a Fire,” so check it out!

Chris Devotion & The Expectations – A Modest Refusal and Blister

Nice and simple music video for a killer song. Check out this song. They hail from Glasgow.

And this one!

Off their album:

Chris Devotion & The Expectations – Amalgamation and Capital (2012)

Review:

(From The Skinny)

Encounter Amalgamation & Capital anonymously and you might presume it a greatest hits rather than a debut, its no-nonsense new-wave suggesting a lost genre classic from a contemporary of Elvis Costello – a Jags, or an Any Trouble perhaps, with extra punk crunch in some of its more straight-up rock n roll numbers. It’s packed to the gills with big hooks and boundless charm, Devotion’s song-writing so expertly lean that the occasional non-starter is easily overlooked.

Highlights include I Don’t Need You Anymore, an old-fashioned pop hit in all but sales and timing; Blister’s robust yet radio-friendly riffing; and closer Better than This, sounding positively epic after so much bubblegum. Needless to say, Devotion and his Expectations are not exactly reinventing the wheel, but nor are they attempting to; instead, they’ve elected to rev it into a rubber-shredding spin, sparks flying from every boldly-struck power chord and cheeky lyrical bon mot.

Buxton – Boy of Nine (Live)

Alittle indie folk for yal!

Buxton – Nothing Here Seems Strange (2012)

Short Review:

I’m really looking forward to music in 2012. We’ve got releases coming out from Lucero, Damien Jurado, The Shins, Delta Spirit and a bunch more. But in all the excitement, let’s not overlook the up and comers in 2012. One such band is a five-piece folk-rock band from Houston that goes by the name Buxton.

The band is celebrating the soon-to-be released New West Records debut album “Nothing Here Seems Strange.” And they do have reason to celebrate. Not just because they landed a record deal with a label touting bands like Old 97′s, Steve Earle, Tim Easton and Drive-By Truckers on it’s roster, but also because Nothing Here Seems Strange is a surprisingly sophisticated (and really good) album from such a young band.
