Woodpigeon – For Paolo

Just a solid song from Woodpigeon who originate in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

From the EP:

Woodpigeon – For Paolo (2012)

Small review:

Originally formed in Scotland as Woodpigeon Divided By Antelope Equals Squirrel, the now Calgary, Alberta based eight-piece have released three albums over the past two years and seem poised to keep pushing on throughout the new year. The set opening title track drifts by on bobbling guitar picks, subdued string flourishes, and breathy Iron and Wine vocals, harmonizing particularly sweetly as the song fades out. The Sufjan Stevens-y “Are You There God? It’s Me Mark” relies on lilting female backing vocals, fluttering violins, and lots of dramatic acoustic guitar.

Hospitality – Friends of Friends

Could be the next big thing since vampire weekend. You judge.

From their debut self titled album.

Reviewsis:

The angular, intricate, and intelligent compositions of Hospitality signal a sophisticated new pop voice. Singer Amber Papini’s idiosyncratic songwriting and incisive lyrics coupled with the band’s rich arrangements on its self-titled debut explore youth, New York, and the bittersweet commingling of past and present in a way that feels just right, right now.

Papini’s singing has a wisp of an English accent via Kansas City (she learned to sing by imitating Richard Butler on The Psychedelic Furs’ Talk Talk Talk), and her lyrics create a moonstruck, even cinematic vision of New York City, where the band formed in 2007. The production by Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells) and band member Nathan Michel imbues the entire record with an intimate yet prodigious sound, layering period keyboards with horns, synthesizers, and treated guitars.

Elizaveta – Dreamer

Lovely song from a lovely album. Check out this folks.

From the album:

Elizaveta – Beatrix Runs (2012)

Review…ish:

Born in New York City and raised in Russia, the classically trained Elizaveta bills her sound as “opera pop,” which is enough to make anybody nervous. But don’t worry –– she’s not one to engage in gratuitous vocal pyrotechnics. (Apologies to Mariah and Christina, and everyone who ever graduated from “American Idol.”)

Rather, she’s prone to mixing elements of pop, classical, opera and soul for a style that sounds both current and from a place outside of time — although she does, every so often, venture into operatic asides that are as jaw-dropping as they are heartbreaking.

Lana Del Rey – Video Games (Live)

Haunting and beautiful. This is the Live version of Video Games. Doesn’t she just ooze elegance?

From the album:

Lana Del Rey – Born to Die (2012)

Quick Review:

Simply put, it is a record that is positively brimming with atmospherics — soaring, sonorous strings, echoing electronic boom-bap, morose, maudlin guitar crescendos — all of which imbue it with a truly epic (if not unnecessarily dramatic) scope. Del Rey’s critics will undoubtedly point out that scope as nothing more than cover for her perceived shortcomings as a performer, but it still makes Born to Die a rather thrilling headphones experience. This is an album that sounds like it cost a million bucks to make — mostly because it probably did.

This is not to say that Born to Die is a bad album — far from it. In fact, it’s certainly w-a-a-y better than most would’ve expected (tellingly, even less will admit to that fact), and Del Rey does showcase some rather deft songwriting prowess — or at least a knack for penning a catchy chorus — particularly on the album’s few bright moments, like “Off to the Races,” “Diet MTN Dew” and “Radio.”
