Some Review:

The question of nationhood, of collective identity seems to linger more strongly than ever.Man Without Country are a duo from Cardiff consisting of Tomas Greenhalf and Ryan James (with the addition of drummer Mike Monaghan for live shows).

Determined to work with fresh technology, rather than be in thrall to it, Man Without Country’s ten-song debut album Foe was produced entirely in Tomas’s bedroom. The album was mixed by Ken Thomas who previously worked with M83 and Sigur Ros.

The band name derives from a sense of not belonging, they say. That feeling is a constant theme throughout the album. According to James “Foe sums up the lyrics of the whole album, a very short three-letter word, for a quite hateful album.”

The often dark and melancholic sound is underlined by their poignant lyrics and despite the obvious musical differences it reminds me of the darkness that also surrounds other welsh bands such as Manic Street Preachers or Funeral For A Friend.

The album embraces the sound of the 80s. While the lyrics are dark and melancholic most of the songs are very danceable (Puppets, King Complex, and Inflammable Heart above all). In all of this the vocals clearly stand out. The singer’s mellow voice seems to emanate from the sound of the synthesizers. This is particularly evident on Ebb & Flow, my personal favourite on the album.

All in all Man Without Country have come up with an admirable debut that stands out from the monotony of most current electro pop bands. It is an album with catchy melodies, beautiful soundscapes and meaningful lyrics.

Funeral Suits – All Those Friendly people

Here is an odd music video. Kinda morbid but still good.

The album is Lily of the Valley (2012). This is Track 5.

In a disused office space deep in North Country Dublin; Funeral Suits spent two years writing their dark noisy debut album, Lily Of The Valley. Produced by Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths) it’s a distorted electro pop collage that treats you like the grown up you desperately wish you were.

Stream Recommended !!

Jukebox the Ghost – Don’t Let Me Fall Behind

This song just is good. Like really good. That’s why I posted it. Enjoy.

Track 5 off the new album Travel Safe (2012)

Info:

On June 12th, Philadelphia rockers Jukebox the Ghost will follow up 2010′s Everything Under the Sun with Safe Travels via Yep Roc Records. Produced by Dan Romer (Ingrid Michelson), the band’s third LP features 13 tracks and is described as “ambitious” by a press release. Judging from the album’s tracklist, four tracks have been performed live, all of which you can preview below.

To support the release, the band will hit the road for most of March, which (naturally) includes a handful of gigs at South by Southwest, the likes of which are fully detailed in the itinerary below. Stay tuned as more surfaces.

Jukebox the Ghost’s (Ben Thornewill/piano, Tommy Siegel/guitar, Jesse Kristinalbum/drums) third album Safe Travels, the ambitious follow up to their 2010 breakout, was produced by Dan Romer (Ingrid Michelson) and features 13 new, original tracks.

Relocating from Philadelphia to New York City and playing over 250 shows since they’re last release, Safe Travels marks a shift in the band’s creative trajectory. “We’ve always been the band that juxtaposes darker lyrics with upbeat music, but this record feels a little more personal,” Thornewill explains. “In the grand scheme of things, it’s certainly not a downer record but you need pain to get joy and joy to get pain; they’re inseperable.”

After the release of 2010′s Everything Under the Sun, Jukebox The Ghost’s fanbase exploded as the band played hundreds of shows and headlined the largest venues of their career, including a packed house at DC’s legendary 930 Club and NY’s Brooklyn Bowl. During their rapid rise the band’s music was featured in an iPad ad, they played on Letterman and Lollapalooza, and much more. 180g 2LP pressing from Yep Roc.
