Van She – Idea of Happiness

I have to post this because I think it’s funny and I like the song. If you are easily offended by men in underwear, don’t watch this. If not, enjoy and laugh a little.

From the album Idea of Happiness (2012)

Van She have kept their percolating, simmering electropop under wraps for a while, but the Aussies are gearing up to drop a new record called Idea of Happiness soon, and they’ve just released the record’s title track for your listening enjoyment. They picked a good time to drop the track – it fits nicely among the ranks of brooding-but-catchy, ‘80s-inspired lovelorn synthpop we’ve been hearing from artists like Grimes and Bear in Heaven this Spring. That mesmerizing chorus in particular is something special, what with those layered, droney synthesized washes and clattering percussion. Idea of Happiness, the album, drops July 10; “Idea of Happiness,” the song, is available right here for your repeat-listening pleasure.

Phantom – Scar

Helsinki electronic duo Phantom are a very new band– as in, they formed at the beginning of this year (according to their bio, anyway). They have one EP to their name, Scars (listen to it here); the xx recently posted up the video for this title track on their Tumblr. Check out the eerie, effects-laden clip here.

This is it. Just a few months ago, January 2012 to be exact, two musicians from Helsinki united their forces and formed a post-indie electronic duo Phantom. Tommi Koskinen and Hanna Toivonen debuted and released their Scars EPand music video in SXSW 2012, and their music has created some buzz on the net in the last few weeks.

Scars‘ beautiful video is made by Studio Lumikuu. If I’m right, the effect is made with Xbox Kinect and it makes the video quite similar to Echo Lake’s Young Silence and of course Radiohead’s House of Cards. I still think it’s very well done and it takes the whole visual concept a step further.

You can listen Phantom’s Scar Ep via Soundcloud and find them on wearephantom.com and Facebook.

Cosmo Jarvis – Love This (Weekly Highlight!)

So the music video is interesting and simple, but man do I like this song! Probably one of the best ones I’ve heard all year. Thanks Cosmo Jarvis for this catchy tune! Enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aAGl4XWvjJs

From the album Thing Bigger (2012)

Notes:

Whilst putting the finishing touches to his first feature film, Naughty Boy, the prolific Cosmo Jarvis releases his third album, on which his engaging blend of skepticism and enthusiasm is paralleled by banjo, mandolin and string quartet.

The countrified rock recalls 1970s precursors such as Van Dyke Parks and the Eagles, a mood cemented by his cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil”. Whether serenading his hard drive in “Lacie” or getting metaphysical in “Love This”, Jarvis’s mind is always alert for the unusual angle.
