The Sweet Serenades – Can’t Get Enough

A Fun video! Old men doing things is always funny.

The Sweet Serenades – Help Me! (2012)

  • Who: Martin & Mathias, the “woodsmen of indie pop.”
  • What: Scruffy indie pop, like Summer CampNicky BlitzTwo Gallants
  • Where: Stockholm, Sweden +Facebook
  • When: Buy new LP Help Me! now.
  • Why: You may remember thesehandsome fellows from one of my top albums of 2009. The Sweet Serenades have one of those shaggy pop sounds that is just loose enough to keep my ears interested while maintaining enough pop sensibility get me addicted. First new single “Moving On” teased us with more of their signature handclaps and “ooh ooohs.” New single “Can’t Get Enough” is a familiar tale of of insatiable lust that prominently features a kazoo. ‘Cause thats just how these dudes roll. It also has a funny video. Get down with the rest of the album ASAP. “Run (Run Run)” is a badass bass jam, “Terminal 2″ has a knee-slapping honkey tonk vibe, and “Bright Lights Big City” upgrades the traditional “ooh oooh” for the rarer “bom bom bom.” Well played.

Sun Airway – Soft Fall (2012)

Jon Barthmus is one complex songwriter; a force to be reckoned with. Since working without outside influence or contribution on his Sun Airway project, Barthmus has significantly shifted his sound from the material we heard on 2010 debut ‘Nocturne Of Exploded Crystal Chandelier’. The songs are expansive, often shrouded in mysterious instrumentation, abstract off-turns, all without teetering into the realms of artistic snobbery.

Machine Birds – Time

Delicate but lovely. Enjoy.

Machine Birds – Save Yourself EP (2012)

Most band names make no sense. Sometimes they derive from a drunken, witty comment. Other times it’s a place or memory taken from the members’ childhoods. And then there’s the ones based on an inside joke or back story that only the band and prying fans would know about. After listening to just one track I knew exactly why the Norwegian duo Marte Maaland Eberson and Maria Skranes call themselves Machine Birds. Eberson’s innovative, synthesized sounds is the machine that fuels the foundation to their tracks, while Skranes’ angelic vocals whisper into your ears like that of a song bird. Together it makes the perfect balance of excitement and delicacy you don’t want to end.

Speaking of ‘the end,’ the songs on Machine Birds’ newly released EP, Save Yourself, reflect on the aftermath of a relationship. ‘Time’ is all about trying to save a relationship, while ‘The Way it’s Meant to Be’ is about letting go of a relationship. And ‘Save Yourself,’ well, that’s about her cheating and begging him to save himself from her and their relationship. I know, pop songs about relationships… how stereotypical. But even though it might not seem like it, these aren’t the average pop songs. The vibe is dark and mysterious with experimental sounds and a whimsical anecdote that beats that ‘boppy’ feel any day. Layered over the electronically charged sounds, the angelic and airy vocals resonate a feeling of enlightenment amongst the darkness. So beautifully eerie, there’s no saving yourself from the captivating trance of these songbirds…

Frightened Rabbit – State Hospital

Beautiful song! Just love it.

Frightened Rabbit – State Hospital – EP (2012)

Reviewish:

“We’ve definitely darkened our corners a little with this EP,” says Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison, of ‘State Hospital’. He’s right. And it suits them. The band have always been laced with a familiar sadness, but this EP, made up of offcuts from their forthcoming album, builds on the doom and gloom in both tone and theme.

The title track, which will feature on the long player, is exemplary of the solemn maturity the Selkirk band has acquired. Charting the tale of patients “born into a grave”, the narrative is as haunting as the soaring melodies. Some of the EP’s tracks are simpler in form and delivery than previous work and the exuberance which made Frightened Rabbit stand out from the crowd is sacrificed for moroseness, which may not be to everyone’s taste.

This is an album’s cutting room floor yet each song still retains Hutchison’s instantly recognizable Scottish drawl, infectious hooks and intelligent lyrics. ‘Boxing Night’ and ‘Home From War’ both paint miserable pictures in an accessible manner – but, it’s Frightened Rabbits more subtle approach which brings out their best, a subtlety not entirely on display here, but one which will surely reappear when given an album to show off their worth. Scottish musical stalwart Aidan Moffat lends his weight on ‘Wedding Gloves’, a glowing indictment of the band’s growth.

Jason Collett – I Wanna Rob a Bank

Wow! Being a teacher means that I don’t post very often. Well I’m trying to come back to this, but I think it will be a slow process. So here we go again. This is Jason Collett with I wanna Rob a Bank. There are some explicit comments in the beginning of this video so BE WARNED!

From the album Reckon (2012)

The new long-player is due out September 25 via Arts and Crafts, and though it’s more than enough to confirm the fella’s mettle, it also comes with a second disc dubbed Essential Cuts. That 11-track set is exactly what it sounds like: a career-spanning retrospective. Guests include Feist, Stars’ Amy Milan, Metric’s Emily Haines and others, and two previously unreleased B-sides round out the set.
