Antony and the Johnsons (My Classics)

Antony and the Johnsons is not for everyone. You either fall in love with the vocals and melodies, or you hate it. It’s up to you. His messages are very interesting, feminist, heavy and deep. Try to stay open minded as we venture into the mind of Antony. Some of the material on this post is going to be graphic so be warned. Oh, and it’s depressing stuff too.

This is “Cut The World” (Graphic).

Here is Swanlight from the Album Swanlight (2010). Very mystical…

and The Great White Ocean.

Lastly, Here is You Are My Sister, from the album I Am A Bird Now (2012).

Quick Bio:

Antony and the Johnsons was first formed by Antony in 1998 in New York. Antony’s first record, the self titled “Antony and the Johnsons” was released in 2000 by David Tibet of Current 93 on his Durtro label. Antony’s second album “I Am A Bird Now” was released in 2005 to positive reviews. The album featured guest appearances by Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, Boy George and Devendra Banhart. The album later received the Mercury Award for the best UK album of 2005. Antony and the Johnsons’ third album “The Crying Light” was released in January 2009 and peaked at number 1 on the European Billboard charts. Antony and the Johnsons released their 4th full length album “Swanlights” in October of 2010. The album featured a duet with Björk called Flétta. At the same time an art book of the same title of Antony’s drawings, photographs and poetry was released through Abrams Image.

Currently Antony is writing the music for the Robert Wilson directed play based on the performance artist Marina Abramovic titled “The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic”. The play will premier this July at the Manchester International Festival. Following the play Antony will perform a series of orchestra concerts in the late summer.

The Tiger and Me – Pantomime

Another lovely female vocalist. Check it out! So good!

From the album The Tiger & Me – The Drifter’s Dream (2012)

Just a bitty bit:

Melbourne sextet The Tiger & Me weave a rare mixture of styles and sounds as three lead vocalists exchange and merge tunes from whispered ballad to fevered maelstrom, from charming pop to explosive, dirty rock. The Tiger & Me’s ascension to prominence commenced with the release of their critically-lauded debut album From a Liar to a Thief in 2010, which in turn led to breakthrough appearances at Port Fairy and Apollo Bay Music Festivals. 2011 left no rest for the wicked as they toured Australia whilst releasing two EPs of a planned 3-part series, The Howling Fire and The Silent City. The series reaches a climactic conclusion with the new album The Drifter’s Dawn.

The first single ‘Pantomime’ is an infectious pop tune that swirls and dives on the edge of losing its mind.

The song that perhaps best encapsulates The Tiger & Me’s sound is ‘Waltz #3′. Breaking the conventions of standard song-form, the tune begins and ends with a full-band riotous singalong chorus, separated by lead singers Ade, Jane and Tobias trading back-to-back verses as they beckon the listener to “dance with me, liar”.

Capturing the raw energy of The Tiger & Me’s live shows was one of producer Steven Schram’s briefs for this album. This is no more evident than in ‘The Prophet Told Me’ – this song was recorded completely live, in one take, and the rough mix off the desk is what you hear on the record.

Alphabet Backwards – Taller

Here is some Poppy Indie Folk for the Folks who like Folk and Pop and indie and accents. It’s catchy!

Alphabet Backwards – Little Victories (2012)

few

After a series of singles, Oxford’s Alphabet Backwards have released their debut album Little Victories. And sure, it’s unashamed c-86 indie-pop witha folky feel-and it’s all the better for it!

Sure, you could be a boring sod and say that they sound like…but why do that, when you could be having the joy of listening to songs like ‘Ladybird,’ album closer ‘Elton John’ (which sees them go eighties in a way that, erm, most c-86 bands wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing a quarter of a century ago) and album highlights ‘Blink Of An Eye’ and ‘Taller.’

And summer may be over, the nights may fair be drawing in, but stick this on, and your heart lifts. And in these dark and uncertain times, that’s more than we can ask for from any album. More than just a little victory.

Bastille – Flaws

These Londoners have a great sound. They should get big. Soon. Hopefully when the world realizes that Mainstream pop sucks lady lumps.

AG – I Wanna Be Your Man

I don’t normally like covers, but this one is good! Check it out! The video is wild as well!

From the album AG – The Beatles EP (2012)

Blurb:

In the Spring of 2012 Adrianne Gonzalez the guitarist and singer for the indie famed “The Rescues” approached Jim Roach about teaming up in the studio to make an EP of early Beatles songs. It was an idea that initially came from a conversation with her publishing company that had recently acquired the copyrights to six early Beatles songs. Jim explains –  ”I, of course, knew of The Rescues but had never met Adrianne until she came by the studio and we went to lunch to talk about The Beatles Project. We formed a very fast friendship and got right to work on making the tracks. The idea was to take these songs that the whole world knows as two minute pop gems and twist them into something a bit more dark and  introspective; which to our surprise the lyrics really lent themselves toward. After finishing the first song (“I Wanna Be Your Man,”) we both knew we were onto a REALLY cool project regardless of whether it saw the light of day. At that point we were just two music nerds getting to geek out on some classic songs. We had an absolute blast.”

The experimental EP couldn’t have come at a better time considering the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Beatles will be celebrated this fall, which will coincide with it’s release date of October 9th, 2012. Even four months before it’s release the album is getting an incredible amount of review and attention from some major hitters like AOL Music, The Huffington Post, and Curved Magazine. Along with it’s release Adrianne will be hitting the road on tour in support of the record.

Angel Snow – Holiday

Here is a lovely song from a lovely voice. Sit back, grab a cup of hot chocolate and stare out the window.

From her Self-Titled album Angel Snow (2012)

Justabit:

The long awaited full length self-titled release from Angel Snow is now available to fans. The record has evolved into a pristine blend of Angel’s hopeful, sorrowful, and sincere music and songwriting. Combine this honesty with sweeping folk melodies and intricate guitar riffs, and the result is the captivating landscape of sound found on her previous album Fortune Tellers.

Fate and faithful perseverance brought Snow’s lifelong dreams to fruition as she prepared to release her second full-length with a major boost from Alison Krauss. Throughout a natural friendship that blossomed from fruitful songwriting, Viktor Krauss, an extremely gifted songwriter and instrumentalist, became the producer and primary co-writer for Angel Snow.

Nicole Miglis – Dark

Sad few days because the Ducks lost…. Here is a sad song for all you Duck fans.

From her self-titled EP Nicole Miglis

Since so many of you loved that Hundred Waters song I posted the other day, I figure this will be another treat. It turns out that Hundred Waters’ lead singer Nicole Miglis has some solo work of her own, including a truly awesome six-song EP that released in mid-January.

What a voice! Her pace and precision, the harmonies and chord changes, are really something special, and in no small part what makes Hundred Waters so captivating. Her self-titled EP consists largely of sparsely-plotted soundscapes, of light guitar plucking and the occasional flute flutter, but Miglis paints them with such engrossingly vivid detail in her lyrics that you feel consumed when you really listen. This is the real deal– no hiding behind technology or crappy fidelity, no lazily mumbling of “lyrics”, no mishmash of influences, no name change or collagen injection. Just raw storytelling, emotional osmosis, and a massive, undeniable amount of talent.
