HI Folks: Thank you for your work in class last week. I appreciated the thoughtful focus you brought to the conversations. Below this is post are the specific directions for the work we will do to prepare for our next class.

Hi Folks: These are the tasks to complete before our next class October 11th
Read: The Emotional Life of your Brain Chapters 6-11. You will be reading the last half of the book. Pay particular attention to chapter 11: Rewired, or Neurally Inspired Exercises to Change Your Emotional Style. To prepare for class, I want you to select one passage from each chapter that captured your attention. It could be a sentence or a series of sentences. Just something that captures a thought or an idea.
On this Google Form for each chapter write the passage followed by 2-4 sentences that explain why this passage captured your attention or why it was important to you. I’d like you to reflect and respond to the passage in a way that captures your thinking. It might be easier to write all your passages on a Google Doc and them copy and paste them into the Google Form.
When you come to class on October 11th, be prepared to talk about why the passage captured your attention.

The work you will do for Assessments 3 and 4 are described below. In addition I have described and selected resources that will help you complete the assessments and deepen your understandings of the social and emotional aspects of your and your students’ lives.
Assessment 3: School Board Social Emotional Learning Proposal: (Due October 9th 11:59 P.M.)
Description: As a teacher and a member of a school improvement committee at your school, you have been chosen to make a recommendation to the incoming school board about what the district can do to meet the emotional learning needs of the students. The board is interested in using the latest information about psychology and human development to select a social emotional learning program. They have asked you to give them a formal written proposal with a SEL program you would recommend. Your task is to select a program you would want to use as a teacher. You can find SEL programs in many different places, but a good starting point is at the Collaborative for Social and Emotional Learning Guide. On this page you can have the program example guide emailed to you. From here you can explore different programs and select one to use for your proposal.
In addition, The Center for Healthy Minds has curriculum and programs to explore that you can use for your proposal. Link here.
Structure of your proposal:
Part 1: (2-3 pages) Describe the social-emotional characteristics the program is targeting (ie. stress and anxiety). Describe the program and the specific aspects of the curriculum. Remember the board knows nothing about the program.
Part 2: (1-2 pages): Describe the research or findings that describe the impact of the program on students social and emotional life.
Part 3: Conclusion
Part 1 Description:
1. Your description should include information about the rationale for the program Answer the question:
Why is this program important for our students and community?
What are the potential positive impacts?
1. Your proposal effectively describes the structure, scope and sequence of the program to the school board. Remember they know nothing about the program and you are trying to help them understand it.
2. Part 2 Evidence: Your proposal has evidence of the impact or effectiveness of the program. The board is interested in using a program that has been shown to have a positive impact on students.
What evidence (research) suggests this program has been effective in other schools or districts? Be specific.
Explain and elaborate on the research that serves as evidence to support its effectiveness.
3. Part 3 Conclusion: Your conclusion should bring together your findings and thoughts as a teacher and clearly summarize and state your recommendation and why.
4. Part 4 Links to references and resources. Include a reference page for any references you make in the body of your proposal. In addition, please include hyperlinks to the programs and resources in your proposal. You can include in-text hyperlinks to support reading.
Submission: Your proposal should be approximately four-six pages double spaced. Use APA referencing. You will save it as a Google Doc and share it with me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Assessment 4 Social Emotional Learning and Mental Health Project. 555 PowerTalk: Due October 11th

Description: For this project you will select and answer an essential question you have about mental health and the social emotional needs of children.
Example: What is the latest information we have about adolescent suicide in Oregon?
Example: What are effective practices for supporting elementary students who experience bullying.
To share your answer with us, you will create a five slide five minute Google Slide Show. You will give your PowerTalk in class on October 11th. You can select five key points and use a slide for each point. You can elaborate on your key point in your discussion and make connections to ideas. The purpose of your slides and talk is to be efficient and clear. For example:
What’s the evidence?
What the current state of affairs?
What is the descriptive data showing us?
What are the kids telling us?
What are effective ways to support kids, teachers and parents?
How does the it differ across, gender, region, ethnic group?
Insert images and Screenshots into your slide show from websites.
Making effective Slides:
- Your essential question is clearly stated and appears on your first slide.
- Each slide contributes important and selected information that builds on the answer to your essential question.
- You’re slides consist mostly of images and simple key points.
- The content on your slides consists of information and data from sources you are using in your research.
